Tarcoles River Boat Tour

Hacienda Nosavar welcomes you to take a boat trip around Guacalillo, a unique destination in Costa Rica at only 2 hours away from San José and just one hour from Jacó Beach.

The Guacalillo estuary and the Tárcoles River, both located in the Costa Rican Pacific coastline, give you the opportunity to observe one of the largest populations of American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) in America and also to discover a mangrove area with a high percentage of biodiversity that includes a large quantity of seabirds and one of the most important protected areas for the scarlet macaw in the country. Boats for up to 25 people will take you to our tour. The extensive mangrove ecosystem is made of four marvelous mangrove species, which are all important nesting sites for all the birdlife that inhabit within them.

They constitute a shelter and a source of nourishment for many fish. Invertebrates in the mangrove are also extremely important for marine productivity. As the boat approaches the sand banks on the river side, our guests will have the opportunity to closely see crocodiles of up to five meters long in their natural habitat. Crocodiles used to be common in mangroves and coast lines, but their population was severely diminished by hunters during the last decades. Nowadays, and thanks to conservation programs, the last census throughout the Tárcoles River in the Carara National Reserve resulted in 50 to 100 individuals per kilometer.
